Edited Out

Our first version had many verses and refrains – when we met with our shanty group the first time, they helped us edit the song to a reasonable length.  Here is what got edited out.  Click on the lyrics to see the stories and people they came from.

Sailing For Gold – a shanty in the making:

Up top they’re quarrying deep in stone caves
Down Under they’re rolling out on the waves

It’s a full time job in part time hours,
A full time job and a full time degree
Full time mother bit off more than I could chew
I’m gone along now, just getting on now, quietly

‘You’re only a girl so what would you know?’
Hoarding cowpats and rubbish for a washday fire
Our Officers need their white shirts and clean socks
If I’m only a girl, you wash and press your attire

Copper in corner, ladle in water,
hand full of soda, She’s gone along now.

As a pastry cook, got my foot in the door,
Took seven years studies for clerical pay
F’r a glass ceiling to shatter takes a long long time,
Hold still, hold it steady, I’m chipping away.

Up top they’ve quarrying deep in stone caves
Down Under they’re rolling out on the waves

Where you been to, where you going?

Up top they’ve been quarrying deep in stone caves
Down Under they’re restin and watchin the waves

Where you been to, where you going?

I’m under the sea in my Sunday best,
My flowery blouse and pinafore dress

Up top, digging down, deep hole in the ground,
Down Under awash with the wind whipping round

Fierce force’ll take you swiftly and surely
Eyes on the coast, 12 hours, seven days
He dances with pots on the deck ten times daily
Our work’s the waiting, I’ll meet you halfway

Where you been to, where you going?

Up top, down under, down beach, over brow
Up Tout, out the Bill, she’s gone along now
